Latest in Beauty - August 2017

Super excitement this month when I won a raffle!  I never win these things (well I didn’t!) and to say I was flabbergasted was an understatement!  The prize?  Well a subscription box of course! For the cost of my ticket (£1) I won a £20 box from Latest in Beauty!

I’d heard of this box a few times through a group I am in on Facebook (BoXession, definitely check it out, it’s fab!) but had always dismissed it.  It’s one of a rare breed of subscription boxes that lets you chose the items you’re being sent.  This has never appealed to me, surely the point of these things is the surprise? My mind has most definitely been changed!

The first thing I needed to do was chose from their subscription plans, 3, 6 or 9 items (at increasing prices) and then browse down the list to choose the products I wanted (this bit is a bit clunky on a mobile, I think I’d head there on my laptop next time). Now to a product novice like me, this started off as quite a daunting task, but by reading the descriptions and reviews and having a vague idea of the things I fancied trying I quickly filled my list.

I was pleasantly pleased by the selection, one of the things I popped in my basket was a mindfulness diary and you know how I’m a sucker for those kind of things!  There was also a nice selection of more natural products. I don't know how often the items are changed so I think I'll probably stalk the site for a bit now and then subscribe if something catches my eye - my prize was ordered for me so I don't yet have an account.

A top tip I’ve gleaned from the group however is to double check the size of the product you’re being sent.  Some are ridiculously small sample sizes but there are a few larger or even full sized products nestled amongst these.  I found the reviews really helped to find these as I’m lousy with weights and volumes!

It was upon receipt of the box that my interest was really piqued though.  Not only were the products I had chosen all really good sizes (yay, I’d negotiated that minefield successfully!) but the company had also bunged in a few extras, one of which was a full sized eyeliner!  Also, as I was a new customer, my box contained a really great sized and well made make-up bag which is definitely going to come in useful on our upcoming family holiday!

I’m not going to go through each product individually right now as you can easily see from the site what’s available and each box is going to be unique to a certain degree but you can see from the image just how great they all are!

I will definitely be revisiting a subscription to this one!

Wobble board

When it comes to toys in our household we've always tried to keep the number we own down.  Don't get me wrong, we have a lot of toys!  Many of these have been inherited from an older cousin and others, like the lego collection have grown because we get just as much enjoyment from it as the six year old does!  With the baby I'm trying to make more of a conscious effort to limit what we get her, specifically the plastic tat.  She has a lot from the boy obviously, but most of her new toys have been chosen to stimulate imagination rather than directed play with flashing lights and limited functionality. I'm also more conscious these days of the impact throw away toys have on the environment and also on their effects when children are exposed to some of the nasty chemicals they can contain.  With this in mind, recently most of our toy purchases have been of a wooden nature: peg dolls, balls, eggs, puzzles... you get the idea. Unfortunately, a lot of these ...

Artemis and Xena

So, in my quest to find the perfect subscription box, this month I decided to give a little known box called Artemis and Xena a go. At first glance I'd dismissed this one as it appeared to be aimed more at a younger teen market and, sadly, I'm very much not in that demographic these days! However I kept coming back to it as it looked like it might meet my desire for a little bit of everything. My experiences with Treatbox and Birchbox had taught me that I don't like just getting makeup (which rules out so many boxes!) but do like getting a bit (which rules out Treatbox); I like getting a little something to eat, a bit of jewellery, a bit of stationary... Yeah, I'm pretty fussy really aren't I?!? A & X looked like it might have this heady mix. It didn't disappoint! At the beginning of the month I have to admit I got a little nervous, my box was late despite a prompt dispatch notice on the first of the month and I began to wonder if I'd been draw...

Birchbox - July 2017

I've uhmed and ahhed about posting this one, you know, if you haven't got something nice to say then you shouldn't say it kinda thing, but after seeing others be really disappointed with Birchbox and frequently seeing their offers designed to entice you in I've decided to put this out there. Maybe I'll return to them one day but this is where I'm at right now... I had a really bad month in July (seems to be a running theme at the moment, life is very trying right now) and, in a moment of weakness, I’m ashamed to say I fell for one of Birchboxes two for one offers.  These involve you purchasing their box of the month and them sending you a mystery box with another five items.  I partly justified this to myself because I fancied trying one of the products in July’s box and partly because I had a plan for the additional two drawer boxes they send their product in. I won’t be making the mistake again (seriously, I’ve even hidden them from my facebook feed beca...
