Treatbox

As I headed back to work after maternity leave with my daughter I decided a monthly subscription box would be a great way to reward myself for the effort of getting us all out of the house on time each day and keeping the house in an (almost) fit state to live in when we returned!  My first subscription was to Treatbox, a lifestyle box centred around well-being and taking a little time out for yourself.  Here are my thoughts:

My First Treatbox - February 2017
When the first box arrived I did wonder whether I'd made the right choice :-/  Whilst the items were nice: a dish to pop your jewellery in, a bracelet (which is actually really cute and I'm still wearing several months later!), a keyring, some lovehearts, a rose garland, some rose wipes and some motivational cards, at the time it felt like a bunch of things I didn't really need.  I did however post the dutiful "I love this box" photo on Instagram, I think partly in the hope of winning a small subscription (got to love free stuff right?!) but also partly to see if anyone would judge me for this superficial treat.  They didn't, others thought it a great idea and I began to see that, actually, there isn't anything wrong with having a treat every once in a while!

Looking back at the box now, I'm actually really please I got it.  The garland and wipes I popped to one side and gave them to my mum for mothers day as part of a box of bits for her, which she loved!  I use the jewellery dish every day to keep my earrings safe by my bed - hopefully preventing any more rolling into the ether never to be seen again (seriously, where do they go?! Are they with all of the socks!??)  I wear the bracelet all the time because it really is cute, although rather grubby now! I ate the lovehearts because, well, they're lovehearts and took the motivational cards to work as a little pick me up when I need it.  The only thing I haven't really used yet is the keyring but I'm sure I will at some point.

The Second Box - March 2017
I had signed up to a monthly subscription for Treatbox because this knocked a bit of money off of it and it saved me having to remember to buy it each month so I found my second box fairly painless in process, the payment was taken on time and it duly arrived at the beginning of the month.  Again I was a little disappointed at the time but looking back it was pretty great for the price.  This month, March, included: A recycled plastic lunchbag, a bathmelt that looked like a slab of white chocolate  (was a little disappointed it wasn't!), some nail-clippers, some seeds, some greeting cards and a bar of honeycomb salted chocolate.

I haven't used the bag yet, it seemed a little flimsy, but I think I probably will or will keep it for a present for my sister along with the nail clippers.  The bathmelt I popped in my mum's mothers day basket.  I need to remember to scatter the seeds somewhere and the chocolate was devoured at the end of the month as a treat for surviving my first month at work, it was delicious! So another hit here!

The Third Box - April 2017
My third box proved to be my last for a few months, not because I didn't like it, I did, perhaps more than the other two, but because I fancied looking around other types of boxes and I can't justify more than one a month (I have my sensible head on!)  This box was great!  It was based on a Disney theme, I'm guessing to compete with all the Beauty and the Beast ones circulating around this time.

Containing the usual motivational print, a mirror, a gorgeous smelling was melt, a motivational pin, a wooden sign for the garden, a notebook and a cookie this book was also brimming for the £12 it cost me!  I have plans for several of the items (that I'm not going to write about here, but seriously, these boxes are great if you want different ideas for gifts!) but the notebook is definitely going to be used by myself and I've devoured the cookie (the icing was a bit strange though, not sure I'll seek out where it actually came from :-/).

Is it worth it?
Yes.  For the amount you're paying each month you definitely get more than enough treats.  I think you have to be the right kind of person for this though.  I'm not sure the prints are really me, I'm not one for memes and things so they tend to get put to oneside - although I may use them for our playroom/study when we get it decorated.  They are great for stockpiling little items you can give for gifts though that you wouldn't have necessarily thought to buy, whilst picking out the treats you want for yourself.  I think I'll definitely return to this box at some point, even if it's just the odd one here and there.  I also used it for a secret santa gift I took part in with an online group as their build your own box options are perfect for this kind of thing. Definitely worth checking out :-)

Wobble board

When it comes to toys in our household we've always tried to keep the number we own down.  Don't get me wrong, we have a lot of toys!  Many of these have been inherited from an older cousin and others, like the lego collection have grown because we get just as much enjoyment from it as the six year old does!  With the baby I'm trying to make more of a conscious effort to limit what we get her, specifically the plastic tat.  She has a lot from the boy obviously, but most of her new toys have been chosen to stimulate imagination rather than directed play with flashing lights and limited functionality. I'm also more conscious these days of the impact throw away toys have on the environment and also on their effects when children are exposed to some of the nasty chemicals they can contain.  With this in mind, recently most of our toy purchases have been of a wooden nature: peg dolls, balls, eggs, puzzles... you get the idea. Unfortunately, a lot of these ...

Artemis and Xena

So, in my quest to find the perfect subscription box, this month I decided to give a little known box called Artemis and Xena a go. At first glance I'd dismissed this one as it appeared to be aimed more at a younger teen market and, sadly, I'm very much not in that demographic these days! However I kept coming back to it as it looked like it might meet my desire for a little bit of everything. My experiences with Treatbox and Birchbox had taught me that I don't like just getting makeup (which rules out so many boxes!) but do like getting a bit (which rules out Treatbox); I like getting a little something to eat, a bit of jewellery, a bit of stationary... Yeah, I'm pretty fussy really aren't I?!? A & X looked like it might have this heady mix. It didn't disappoint! At the beginning of the month I have to admit I got a little nervous, my box was late despite a prompt dispatch notice on the first of the month and I began to wonder if I'd been draw...

Birchbox - July 2017

I've uhmed and ahhed about posting this one, you know, if you haven't got something nice to say then you shouldn't say it kinda thing, but after seeing others be really disappointed with Birchbox and frequently seeing their offers designed to entice you in I've decided to put this out there. Maybe I'll return to them one day but this is where I'm at right now... I had a really bad month in July (seems to be a running theme at the moment, life is very trying right now) and, in a moment of weakness, I’m ashamed to say I fell for one of Birchboxes two for one offers.  These involve you purchasing their box of the month and them sending you a mystery box with another five items.  I partly justified this to myself because I fancied trying one of the products in July’s box and partly because I had a plan for the additional two drawer boxes they send their product in. I won’t be making the mistake again (seriously, I’ve even hidden them from my facebook feed beca...
